Tottenham Hotspur Moves Away from VMware, Cutting Licensing Costs by More Than 85%

Premier League football club Tottenham Hotspur has moved away from VMware as part of a broader data center and network modernization initiative, reducing its virtualization licensing costs by more than 85%.

However, according to the club’s Chief Technology Officer, Rob Pickering, the decision was not driven by cost savings alone. The wider objective was to simplify infrastructure operations, introduce more automation, and place AIOps at the center of the club’s technology strategy.

A Major Technology Infrastructure Behind a 63,000-Seat Stadium

Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is far more than a football venue. With a capacity of nearly 63,000 spectators, it operates a highly complex technology environment that supports match days, concerts, NFL games, rugby events, and year-round commercial activities.

The stadium infrastructure includes:

  • More than 1,650 Wi-Fi access points
  • Over 840 under-seat access points
  • Around 700 Bluetooth beacons
  • Approximately 20,000 network access points
  • 1,849 IPTV screens
  • 519 CCTV cameras
  • A six-aisle on-site data center

Managing such an environment requires high availability, strong network density, and an operational model capable of minimizing downtime.

Replacing VMware with HPE GreenLake

As part of the modernization program, Tottenham has completely redesigned its server, storage, virtualization, and networking environment around the HPE GreenLake portfolio.

The club has deployed HPE ProLiant Compute Gen12 servers together with HPE Alletra Storage MP.

For virtualization, Tottenham has replaced VMware with HPE Morpheus VM Essentials, while OpsRamp is being used to support infrastructure monitoring and operations.

The hybrid cloud environment will also be delivered as a managed service by HPE.

Pickering described HPE VM Essentials as a fully capable replacement for the VMware platform previously used by the club.

Licensing Costs Were a Major Factor

One of the most significant outcomes of the migration has been the reduction in licensing costs.

According to Pickering, Tottenham is now spending more than 85% less on virtualization licensing compared with its previous VMware environment.

The timing is particularly significant.

Since Broadcom completed its acquisition of VMware in 2023, VMware has made major changes to its licensing, packaging, and commercial model. Several standalone products have been discontinued or consolidated into broader software bundles.

For many organizations, this has increased costs and forced them to reassess whether their existing VMware architecture still provides the required level of business value.

Tottenham was one of those organizations.

However, the club’s decision was not based solely on licensing costs.

Virtualization Is Becoming a Commodity

One of the most interesting aspects of Tottenham’s technology strategy is the way the organization now views virtualization itself.

Rather than seeing the hypervisor as the central source of value in the infrastructure stack, Tottenham considers virtualization to be an increasingly commoditized layer.

The real value, according to the club, lies in how virtualization integrates with a broader operational platform.

Tottenham operates a relatively small IT team considering the scale and complexity of its technology environment.

For that reason, automation is essential.

The club wants its infrastructure management platforms to identify problems before they affect users and, where possible, resolve those problems without requiring manual intervention.

This is where AIOps — Artificial Intelligence for IT Operations — becomes critical.

By bringing data from servers, storage, virtualization, networking, and other infrastructure components into a centralized operational platform, the IT team can gain greater visibility across the environment.

Rather than managing multiple independent tools and consoles, the goal is to operate from a single management layer.

This approach can help reduce operational workload, accelerate incident response, and allow a smaller technical team to manage a much larger infrastructure estate.

Wi-Fi 7 and Aruba Central Transformation

Tottenham’s modernization project is not limited to the data center.

The stadium network is also being upgraded to Wi-Fi 7, with management being moved to HPE Aruba Central.

This is particularly important during match days.

At peak times, approximately 30,000 fans may connect to the stadium Wi-Fi network simultaneously.

Supporting this level of concurrent usage requires both significant wireless capacity and sophisticated radio-frequency engineering.

The project involves approximately 1,800 access points across the stadium.

Replacing and upgrading this infrastructure without disrupting stadium operations is a major challenge because the venue is active throughout most of the year.

There is effectively no traditional maintenance window in which the entire environment can simply be taken offline.

The Physical Challenges of Stadium Networking

Large stadiums also present unique wireless engineering challenges.

Because of the extensive use of steel, glass, and other structural materials, the stadium can behave in some ways like a large Faraday cage.

This can make radio-frequency propagation difficult and unpredictable.

At the same time, the extremely high density of users requires a large number of access points positioned carefully throughout the venue.

As a result, a stadium Wi-Fi deployment is not simply an IT installation. It is also a physical and radio-engineering project.

Coverage, capacity, interference, access-point placement, and structural limitations must all be considered together.

A Broader Lesson for Organizations Reviewing VMware

Tottenham Hotspur’s migration is an important example of the wider changes currently taking place in the enterprise virtualization market.

Following Broadcom’s acquisition of VMware and the subsequent licensing and packaging changes, many organizations are reviewing their virtualization strategy.

However, the Tottenham example shows that this review should go beyond the question of replacing one hypervisor with another.
